For the uninitiated, let us give you a brief explanation about the Camp…

The Kumamoto International Manga Camp (KIMC) is manga event held in the beautiful town of Takamori, on Japan’s Kyushu island. Exclusively open to SMA MasterClass members, creators who have attained the highest awards in the SILENT MANGA AUDITION®, the Camp offers the chance to learn more about making manga and the manga industry.

The 2019 Report will focus on the four newest members of the MasterClass, including two members from Indonesia, one from Malaysia and the last from Brazil.

The Camp kicks off with a glittering Opening Ceremony to welcome the newest members of the SMA MasterClass. With the opening speech by former the Chief-Editor of “Weekly Shonen Jump” and COAMIX Inc. CEO Nobuhiko Horie still ringing in their ears, the invited guests, including the winners of SMA CHINA hold their collective breath and await the handing out of the SMA MasterClass certificates!

The first to receive the much coveted SMA MasterClass certificate is Malaysian manga artist Harihtaroon.

Receiving the Grand Prix award for her amazing SMA EX4 entry Lucky Charm, Harihtaroon’s tireless work with the SMA has paid off with her induction into the SMA MasterClass.

Day 2 of the 2019 Kumamoto International Manga Camp began with a celebratory welcome speech from COAMIX Inc. CEO Nobuhiko Horie whose mission, in collaboration with the town of Takamori, is to expand the Japanese manga industry into the world. Day 2 also included the Camp’s first of six Manga Workshops, where our invited guests got the chance to learn from successful Japanese mangaka and experienced Japanese editors.

Surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Takamori, the Kumamoto International Manga Camp takes place within the sprawling “campus” of the Takamori Folk School. More than just an opportunity to learn manga making from the professionals, the Camp also offers the chance to experience the wonders of this beautiful area of Kyushu.

The school’s gymnasium, a typical structure recognizable throughout Japan is the location of the first activity. An absorbing lecture about Takamori’s hidden delights, conducted by an enthusiastic member of the the Minami Aso Railway Takamori Line service.

As the lecture comes to a close, the invited manga artists are surprised by a very special guest… Takamori’s adorable mascot Kazemaru!

With a hearty lunch over with, our international guests are primed for their very first editorial session with Japanese editors!

Prior to the Camp, we asked all our invited guests to create a very simple manga “name” showing a unique character perform their “special power” and accompanied with character concept designs. This “name” is to be the focus of these sessions, giving the MasterClass the chance for some effective feedback.

The role of the manga editor is to get the very best out of the artist, helping to deliver effective and entertaining manga to hungry readers!

As the first reader of their artist’s work, the editor will spot what elements need to change or remove, where the action needs to speed up or slow down, and even advise on the placement of speech bubbles and kakimoji.

Additionally, the editor may also come up with a manga concept that best exhibits an artist’s strengths. With the invaluable feedback and advice from the Zenon editors still swirling in the minds of our international mangaka, we dive headlong into Day 3.

Featuring an intense look at the manga industry in the Manga Meetings, more creative workshops and delicious culinary experiences, the third day of the Kumamoto International Manga Festival promises to be even more action packed than the first two!

Day 3 kicks off with a serious tone… an in-depth look at the manga business. With four tables manned by the cream of the manga industry, Tsukasa HOJO, Ryuji TSUGIHARA, Jun TOMIZAWA and Nobuhiko HORIE, our invited guests are offered the exclusive chance to direct questions, as well as receive insights from these giants of manga.

At the Manga Camp, we believe you have to work for your lunch! So with chopsticks at the ready, our guests had enormous fun catching their food as delicious somen noodles cascaded down three bamboo slides. Nagashi-somen (flowing noodles) is a staple activity in Japan, making for a unique dining experience!

Now fully fed, it’s time to continue with the manga workshops. Using the feedback received in Day 2, our international guests make improvements on their “name” assignments under the experienced eyes of the Zenon editorial department.

After an intense day of manga making under the guiding eyes of the Monthly Comic Zenon editors, our international guests have earned a little R&R! So with that in mind, the fourth and final day of the Kumamoto International Manga Camp 2019 offered the opportunity to experience traditional Takamori with guided tours of the region’s hidden gems.

As the sun rises, members of the Kumamoto International Manga Camp 2019 gather for an unforgettable experience. Hidden amongst the bows of ancient trees is the ornate and etherial Buddhist temple of Ganzo, where our group will be introduced to the mediative practice of Zazen.

It is said that a visit to the Ganzo temple will ensure a successful future for young people starting out on their careers. What could more apt for our manga making MasterClass and their mission to debut in Japan?!

The head monk introduces himself and gives our rapt guests a brief explanation about the Zazen meditation method. Adopting the “lotus” position, the international manga artists place both hands on knees, palms down, and form a circle with their thumb and forefinger before gently swaying. With this calming motion, one can eventually the reach incredibly calming levels of enlightenment.

Splitting into groups, our guests are offered the chance to experience three of Takamori’s thriving industries…

The first group visits a Tatami manufacturer. Made from soft rush straw, the Tatami has been used to cover the floors of traditional Japanese homes since before the Heian period (794 to 1185). Fascinated by the ancient process of creating these traditional floor coverings, the business owner ensures we never forget our visit by gifting us some beautiful samples of decorative Tatami. ありがとう!!

With time to spare before lunch, the group then made their way to a bookshop where our manga artists pored over the inexhaustive selection of manga for sale.

The second group embarks on a much more tastier experience, with a visit to Takamori’s celebrated Miso and Soy Sauce factory!

Miso, a traditional seasoning produced by fermenting soybeans with salt and kōji is a staple addition to most Japanese dishes. But perhaps an even more popular condiment is Soy Sauce, made from fermented paste of soybeans, roasted grain, brine, and Aspergillus oryzae. The factory, where both of these delicious Japanese delicacies are produced use methods that have hardly changed for hundreds of years.

With pots of miso soup greedily sampled, the owner of this delightful factory surprises us with Soy Sauce flavored ice cream! (Believe us, it was much tastier than it sounds!)

The third group experience a more modern take on Japan with a visit to a pachinko parlor followed by a guided tour of Japan’s national tipple… sake!

Originally built as a children’s toy in the 1920’s as a take on the pinball machine, Pachinko has a more adult fanbase today thanks to its “jackpot” feature. Modern Pachinko machines feature short anime sequences to enhance the gambling experience, which instantly piqued the interest of our anime loving guests!

Escaping the deafening din of the Pachinko Parlor, the group delved into Japan’s “partying” past with a visit to a Sake brewery. The origins of sake are lost to the mists of time, with the earliest mention being attributed to the 3rd century Chinese text Records of the Three Kingdoms with a reference to the Japanese “drinking and dancing”.  Made from fermented rice (rice wine), the process is more akin to brewing beer than wine making. Whatever sake’s origins or brewing process,  our international guests all agreed on one thing… sake is tasty!

A “Matsuri” festival is a traditional celebration attributed to the rice paddy harvest. With games including Goldfish scooping (or in this case, rubber ball scooping) and shooting galleries, the festival is a yearly highlight for children and adults alike.

With fresh bento boxes (lunch box) handed out to our hungry guests, the wonderful people of Takamori guide the manga artists on a whistle stop tour of their mini-Matsuri!

After four intensive days of manga workshops, ideas generation and culture exchanges, not to mention fun and friendship, our international guests bid a fond farewell to the captivating town of Takamori to spend the day soaking in the sites of Kumamoto City!

The final day of the Kumamoto International Manga Camp 2019 starts with warm welcome from manga royalty! The enigmatic Monkey D Luffy from the acclaimed manga series “One Piece” strikes an imposing pose much to the delight of our guests. Created by Oda Eiichiro sensei, a Kumamoto native, the bendy pirate has almost eclipsed the mighty Kumamon for the city’s mascot top spot!
熊本国际漫画营2019的最后一天从漫画皇室的热烈欢迎开始!来自著名漫画系列“One Piece”的神秘猴子D Luffy摆出一个令人印象深刻的姿势,使我们的客人感到非常高兴。由熊本人Oda  Eiichiro老师创建,这位易弯曲的海盗几乎使强大的Kumamon黯然失色,成为该市吉祥物的头把交椅!

Following the devastating earthquake of 2016, Oda sensei donated ¥800 million ($7.1 million) in the name of Luffy to help in the reconstruction of prefecture, making the pirate a hero on AND off the page! (source: japantimes.co.jp)

The bronze Luffy statue can be found in front of the Kumamato Prefectural Government building.

Next up is a botanical bonanza, with a gentle stay in the exquisite Suizenji Park. Created in 1632 by Lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi of Kumamoto as a statement of his family’s majesty, the finely sculpted landscape is a typical example of Japanese gardening at its best.

This year’s Camp happened to coincide with the 24th World Women’s Handball Championship, an event the city honored with a magnificent Kumamon straw statue. French MasterClass alumni Nicolas David couldn’t help but pose with everyone’s favorite bear sporting the colors of the Japanese team!

This week, I look to one of our own. Hojo sensei, one of the founders of COAMIX, has built an illustrious career that boarders on the cinematic. With Femme Fatale’s aplenty, the Manga Master has made liberal use of classic movie tropes that shine a light on the good, the bad and the ugly of life, all carried out with tongue firmly in cheek.

About…

A native of Kyushu, Tsukasa Hojo’s career in manga could well be viewed as ‘accidental’. While studying at Kyushu Sangyo University, Hojo spent much of his time balancing film and illustration. These two, albeit similar forms of visual expression would come to a head when he submitted a piece, “just for fun” to girl’s manga magazine Ribon. Unexpectedly receiving an Honorable Mention Award for his efforts, this seemingly innocuous event decided the future of Hojo’s artistic output.

While living the typical, penniless student life, Hojo’s friend brought the fledgling manga creator’s attention to Shonen Jump’s Tezuka Award. With a 1 million Yen top prize, the competition was too tempting to pass up, so empowered by his modest achievement with Ribon, Hojo hastily got together a 31 page story, submitted and against all odds, won!

Not long after graduation, Hojo sent a storyboard to Jump, of what would later become his breakout hit, Cat’s Eye. The editor was so impressed by the potential of this young manga creator, that he insisted he up-sticks, leave Kyushu behind and set up shop in Tokyo, going so far as to pay for his accommodation. That editor was a certain Nobuhiko Horie, future CEO of COAMIX and the driving force behind SMAC!

Hojo was more than daunted by the grueling work load of the tireless Mangaka. Advised to “grind out” work for 5 years, the standard “probation period” of professional manga creators, the author of Cat’s Eye, City Hunter and Angel Heart stuck to his convictions, toiled away at a frantic pace and created some of the most enduring characters ever to fill the pages of manga.

MY THOUGHTS

I’ve always had a passion for detective stories of the 40’s and 50’s, from the screen work of the eternally grumpy Humphrey Bogart to the gritty world of Raymond Chandler. The characters of that time were larger than life, almost caricatures of emotion who dominated the stories they inhabited. The downtrodden ‘gumshoe’ detective; the stoic and all knowing bartender and the lustful, yet unattainable Femme Fatale, these were characters that spoke to me on a personal level. Veritable “anti-heroes” that are flawed, almost vindictive at times, who use whatever methods they have to get the job done, not only make for strong and interesting characters, but allow us to identify with the stories unfolding before us. Tsukasa Hojo took this concept of character driven narratives, warts and all, and ran with it!

Debuting in 1981, Cat’s Eye was Hojo’s breakout work. The tale of three sisters engaged in art theft looks, on the face of it, a tale of daring anti-heroes with a devil-may-care attitude. But more than that, Cat’s Eye, like real life, is a story steeped in duality. Hitomi, the eldest sister and the driving force of their criminal behavior, loves the inept police officer in charge of bringing them to justice. She also displays incredible levels of jealousy, going so far as to resent her own alter-ego when Toshio, the bumbling cop, spends more time in pursuit of his nemesis than he does wooing his beloved. These all too real emotions are the secret to Cat’s Eye success, firmly placing the morality of Hojo’s characters well and truly in the grey area.

Arguably Hojo’s most famous work, City Hunter, we meet characters that we can’t help but fall in love with, precisely because they are wading around in this murky grey area. We have Ryo Saeba, a killer and borderline sex offender tasked with righting the wrongs within Tokyo’s seedy underbelly. His ever suffering partner Kaori, a tomboyish moody character, is constantly rebuffing Ryo’s advances, yet secretly exhibits dismay when ignored by him. In a perfect example of life imitating art, fans of the manga started leaving XYZ calling cards, the means of contacting the City Hunter agency in stations around Tokyo, further exhibiting how Hojo expertly crafts characters that resonate on a personal level.

City Hunter’s spiritual successor, Angel Heart is a mark of maturity, both for the author and his creations. Set in an alternate reality, where Kaori’s heart is transplanted into an assassin driven to suicide for the lives she has taken, signifies a turning point in Hojo’s work. Yes, Ryo is still as rampant as ever, but in place of feverishly exerting wanted/unwanted sexual advances, we have a paternal figure who quickly falls into a father role by caring for his 15 year old ward. ‘Glass Heart’, the recipient of Kaori’s heart, herself on a mission of redemption, exhibits a will to crawl out of her murky past and reinvent herself as better person. With this sense of responsibility, coupled with the incessant gnawing of guilt, Hojo abandons the urges of youth and places his characters firmly in the modern age.

As in movies, a simple change of camera angle in mangas can make a scene fun or sad. Even with the same facial expression, it is possible to convey different emotions. I hope everyone will enjoy the “power of performance” that is the core of manga as they work on their projects.

Tsukasa Hojo-sensei and Takehiko Inoue-senesi, two legendary manga creators known around the world for their intense storytelling.  Two manga creators who were once master and apprentice.  The two sensei’s were brought back together by Monthly Comic ZENON for a rare double interview!  What sort of truly memorable conversation ensued between the two manga legends and former master and apprentice?  SMAC! THE WEB MAGAZINE brings you a small look into Hojo and Inoue-sensei’s long relationship.
北条司老师和井上雄彦老师,两位以故事性强而闻名世界的传奇漫画家。两位漫画创作者曾是师徒关系。此次《月刊漫画ZENON》将两位老师再次请到一起,进行了一次难得的双重采访! 接下来,两位漫画传奇人物、曾经的师徒之间会有怎样真正难忘的对话呢?  《SMAC!网络杂志》为您带来了北条和井上老师的长久关系的小故事。

“I would leave the studio at 1 AM and come back in the morning and find BB’s in the blinds.” -Hojo-sensei
"我会在凌晨1点离开工作室,早上回来发现百叶窗里有BB弹。" -北条老师

Hojo-sensei and Inoue-sensei’s conversation began with Inoue-sensei remembering the time he spent studying under Hojo-sensei in 1988.  At that time City Hunter was in full weekly production, a very busy time for Hojo and Inoue-sensi.  Busy, but there was always time for fun.  “I would leave the studio at 1 AM and come back in the morning and find BB’s in the blinds.” Hojo-sensei remembered.  Inoue-sensei recalled one of the sempai (senior) assistants would go overboard after a few drinks a would shoot the BB gun’s in the assistant’s room.  A common occurrence when the deadlines were near.
北条老师和井上老师的对话,首先是井上老师回忆起1988年跟随北条老师学习的时光。 那时候每周都在全力制作《城市猎人》,对于北条和井上老师来说,是非常忙碌的一段时间。虽然忙,但总有时间找点乐子。"我会在凌晨1点离开工作室,早上回来发现百叶窗里有BB弹"。北条老师回忆道。 井上老师回忆说,有一位前辈(高级)助理喝了几杯酒后就会很过分,会在助理的房间里打BB枪。 在临近最后期限的时候,这是经常发生的事情。

“Take-chan, you still lived in Kichijoji when you went independent right?” -Hojo-sensei

Hojo and Inoue-sensei’s conversation moved on to when Inoue-sensei branched off independently.  Hojo-sensei took the opportunity to say, “Take-chan, you still lived in Kichijoji when you went independent right?”  Kichijoji is a town full of memories for Inoue-sensei, some good, some not so good.  Inoue-sensei recalled, “Kichijoji was where I was told my first series would be discontinued.”  Shocking words, but Inoue-sense found relief in them because in his heart wanted to create a basketball manga.  Like a true master and apprentice, Hojo and Inoue-sensei both agreed sometimes a manga creator can only make a series he thinks is interesting.

Hojo and Inoue-sensei then agreed a manga is brought to life through the readers and the two thought about who their readers were.  “I create manga for people like me.” Inoue-sensei said.  A little vague for some people, but he never creates a manga for himself.  And Hojo-sensei?  He creates manga for his wife, manga that would make her cry.  Hojo-sensei’s wife isn’t the type of person to read manga regularly, so showing her the story first is Hojo-sensei’s chance to gauge the reaction of those type of readers.
北条和井上老师然后一致认为,一部漫画有了读者才有生命力,两人就想到了自己的读者是谁。"我为像我这样的人创作漫画",井上老师说。 对某些人来说有些模糊,但他从不为自己创作漫画。 而北条老师呢? 他为他的妻子创作漫画,会让她哭的漫画。北条老师的妻子不是那种经常看漫画的人,所以先把故事拿给她看,北条老师正好借此机会估计这类读者反应。

As Hojo and Inoue-sensei’s conversation progressed they thought about how their creative process evolved.  For Hojo-sensei, as he aged creating the manga NAME has become enjoyable and inking difficult.  Not because he older, but because his experience in constructing a story made him lose a bit of his sense of wonder for the story, thinning the emotional content.  A different point of view came from Inoue-sensei.  For Inoue-sensei, the final art is where the creators plays and the NAME is the framework for the manga.  Inoue-sensei eloquently stated, “The manga NAME is the frame and the art is the manga’s body.”
随着北条和井上老师的谈话,他们思考了自己的创作过程是如何演变的。 对于北条老师来说,随着年龄的增长,创作漫画NAME变得愉快,而把它画出来却变得困难了。 并不是因为他年纪大了,而是因为他构建故事的经验让他失去了一点对故事的惊喜感,淡薄了情感内容。井上老师提出了不同的观点。 对于井上老师来说,最终的艺术效果是创作者发挥的地方,而NAME是漫画的框架。 井上老师精辟地指出:"漫画NAME是框架,艺术是漫画的主体。"

Hojo and Inoue-sensei may have disagreed about the creative process, but both sensei’s agreed about mixing humor into serious stories.  Hojo-sensei was still young when he realized “People can’t stand a heavy atmosphere in a story for to long.  They want to breath when tense scenes continue.”  It was the movie Japan Sinks that led Hojo-sensei to believe this.  Learning from this Hojo-sensei always adds humor to his emotional stories.  To Hojo-sensei studied way of including humor, Inoue-sensei believes comedy should come about naturally.  It’s almost as if Inoue-sensei pokes fun at himself to keep from becoming embarrassed if a serious scene continues to long.
北条和井上老师或许在创作过程中存在分歧,但两位老师都同意在严肃的故事中加入幽默感。 北条老师还很年轻的时候就意识到"人们不能长时间忍受故事中沉重的气氛。紧张的场面持续下去,人们就会想喘口气。"  是电影《日本沉没》让北条老师相信了这一点。 学会了这一点的北条老师总是在他的情感故事中加入幽默。 对于北条老师研究的加入幽默的方式,井上老师认为喜剧应该是自然而然出现(在故事里)的。 这几乎就像是井上老师的自嘲一样,为的是防止严肃的场景持续时间过长而变得尴尬。

Hojo and Inoue-sensei’s conversation came to a close with Hojo-sensei asking Inoue-sensei about his manga roots.  “I read manga magazines outside a candy shop when I was a kid.” Inoue-sensei recalled.  Hearing this Hojo-sensei mused how he’d love to see his apprentice create manga that are read like that forever.  It may be difficult to write shonen comics as both sensei’s get older, but they will keep finding ways to make manga that are enjoyed outside a candy store.
北条和井上老师的谈话进入了尾声,北条老师向井上老师询问了他的漫画根源。 "我小时候在糖果店外看漫画杂志"。井上老师回忆道。 听了这句话,北条老师思索着,他很希望看到自己的徒弟能创作出让人永远读下去的漫画。 随着两位老师的年纪越来越大,可能会很难画少年漫画,但他们会一直想办法创作出让糖果店以外的人喜欢的漫画。
